So often we hear all these awful things about this next generation. They are often described as more lonely, more depressed, and more anxious than ever before. Of course this is often blamed on their extreme use of phones, social media, and therefore their inability to interact in person. 

I have been leading high school girls over the course of several time period, from 2000-2004, 2009, and then since 2017, and here is what I know:

• They are addicted to their phones: When I compare my youth now to the early 2000’s 1000% yes! Here is the thing. Yes, they spend time mindlessly scrolling, but so do I. Yes, they always have it on them at all times, but so do I. But they also can put it down to have a conversation with you.
• They desire interaction: Youth want to hang out with adults. They desire to feel included and a part of your life, even if it is just running an errand with your family. The youth of today are just like the youth before, they want to be seen.  I have never had a student not want to spend time with myself or my co-lead. This generation craves the attention. Guess what? If you ask them to put away the phone when you give them time, they will! 
• They serve: This generation, when challenged, will serve. They desire to help others and to feel validated through service. They will choose to wake up early (6 AM) on a Sunday and serve all day at church, not because they feel obligated, but because they WANT to. 
• They love Jesus: This past week our church saw over 2,300 students attend church camp, YTHX. That is just ONE church! Not only did they attend but they were on fire! When they worshipped, they worshipped with arms raised and tear streaked cheeks. 
• God is moving this generation like never before. This is the generation that is going to do far more for God. They are already seeking out God’s calling on their life. They are already making commitments to live a Godly life. 

According to Kasasa, this is the largest generation. The more of this generation that is affected by the grace of Jesus Christ, the more of their own generation they will reach through their social media connections. This generation is all about practicing what you preach. Therefore, they will have a greater impact. 

1 Timothy 4:12 Don’t let anyone look down on you because you are young, but set an example for the believers in speech, in conduct, in love, in faith and in purity.

If you know a Gen Z youth, interact with them by making time. They want to be seen and they want to be heard. Help guide them in their faith and the difficult decisions in life. They may be looking at a phone, but they want validation from you. How we interact with and support this generation for Christ, is on us.
