It has been an honor to be able to not only read and review this incredible book, but for her to take the time to interview with myself and my readers. Morgan has her own organization called Morganize with Me, is a wife, mother, and fitness instructor. I can’t wait for you to get to know her a bit more and to find your own growth in her book Take Back Your Time.
Tell us a little about yourself and why you decided to write this book.
As a wife, mom, professional organizer, and fitness instructor, I have my own struggles with time management. Managing one’s time (well) is an ongoing discIpline. However, in coaching my clients and in learning how to balance my own demands with home/work/life, I have discovered those tools that really work and also those that don’t. My hope is to encourage and equip others to intentionally steer their time. I want my readers, clients, and followers to experience less hustle and more harmony.
If you could describe your audience who would you say this book is written for?
I write to women (in all seasons of life). However, the tools can most definitely be used by anyone, in any season of life.
You work through decluttering (physical, mental, emotional), priorities, scheduling, setting goals, and even personality types! Each section is practical and has hands on ways to work through time management I know the reader will appreciate. I love the concept of the GTZ, YTZ, and RTZ. How did you come up with this concept?
The concept came from working with my clients. The reason my clients hire me is because they want and/or need accountability. By working together we not only schedule the time to work, but then we “do” the work! Essentially, we are committing to working in the GTZ. I’ve seen time and time again that there is a common tendency for others (and myself) to mismatch when we choose to do certain tasks. The concept of the three time zones helps you to be more intentional with “when” you do “what.” It helps you to be more deliberate with scheduling and structuring your time.
You provide great practical tips at the end of each chapter. Describe the process for how/why you decided to add these.
I want readers to take action! I felt that tangible tips would help readers to start making small changes, right away. I think providing the how-to is so important. It’s how we get started and then hopefully keep going!
You identify “The Daily 5” you did with your family. Can you briefly explain this concept? Did this change over the years? At what age did you begin this with your kids?
We started using this when our kids were all in grade school. The daily five outlined for each of them their top five daily priorities. Those things that needed to be done each day (ie: load dishes, complete daily chores, hang up coat/backpack). It was printed on a card for each of them and then posted where they each could see it. This way we could simply ask, “Have you done your Daily Five?,” instead of having to go down the checklist each and every day. It’s a great way to hold your kids more accountable. And yes, it has evolved over the years. Currently I only use it with my youngest teenager, my older two are pretty self-sufficient these days (and driving, yay!).
I follow your Instagram “Morganize With Me” and I love that you show concepts from the book. One recently was to Set a Timer. Is there a story behind this habit?
A timer is a wonderful tool. My suggestion is to set your timer and then use it as a boundary. For example, when you want to accomplish something, whether that be reading through your emails or folding your laundry, use a timer to block out the time and then work specifically on that task. Using a timer helps to keep you on track. It can limit you from spending over an hour on emails or can motivate you to finally get all of that laundry folded!
I am fascinated with your time in Portugal. I noticed you homeschool your children until you moved. Can you tell us about that season shift?
We really enjoyed homeschooling, but also discussed that if we were to move overseas that we would take advantage of the international school experience. We felt that by enrolling our kids in school again that this would give them a community, which it did. It was a great fit for all three of them! Living overseas can tend to feel isolating, so this was a great choice for our family.
