As everyone excitedly climbs into the car at five am for a long road trip, the children quietly whisper to each other as my husband gently nudges me to remind me to put the address in the GPS. Just kidding, our road trips have never begun like this. Instead the first grader hops into the car too early and whines when he has to get back out to go the bathroom, as the teenagers grunt annoyingly at each other and someone inevitably steps on someone else’s stuff. My husband and I are running around making sure all the lights and faucets are turned off, reverifying that all the kids have used the restrooms, and nothing has been left behind. Then as we are pulling onto the main road my husband will grunt something about where we are going and I am then frazzled to pull up the GPS.
But once the GPS is in, we can all take a sigh of relief because she will get us there. Yes, the GPS has word power. We cling to her every word, directing us where to go. Without a second thought, we follow her demands. In fact a quick google search and you will find many stories of people who have driven their car right into a lake. I am sure you laughed when Michael did it on The Office, but this has actually happened to more than one person!
When did we stop looking at roadways and maps and begin to blindly trust the GPS?
Then I began to wonder what else am I blindingly listening to for guidance in my life?
The GPS isn’t the only voice making demands and giving us instructions. We have our family, our friends, our church leaders, podcasts, music, Netflix, etc. Some of these voices may have great intentions, but just as the GPS isn’t a supplement for a road map, nor should these voices be for our life.
We can go to church, listen to other pastor sermons, listen to worship music all week, read only books by Christian authors, and still be left empty. Although all of these are great resources, it is not THE SOURCE.
I had the honor to read Brittany Ann’s Fall in Love with God’s Word this month and she reminded me of the power of God’s Word. In it she said, “When God speaks, people are healed, relationships restored, and future’s redeemed.”
Can you imagine having this sort of word power? Things come into existence and promises made are kept! We have all fallen short on our promises, some larger than others, but we have all bitten off more than we can chew. As I wrote last week in Mom Rage, my word power isn’t always the most calm or patient. In fact, I wonder what kind of power my own words have on people?
Let’s think about it. Some may look at your life and say you have made a powerful impact, while the stranger who crossed your path on a bad day may say differently. Your co-workers may see your encouraging voice, while your family gets the exhausted, tired, and grumpy voice.
As I read Fall in Love with God’s Word, I was reminded over and over again just how powerful God’s Word is. If we aren’t spending time in His Word, we are missing out on the direct source of wisdom, love, and His promises. What God reveals to your pastor or your favorite author, may not be what He wants to reveal to you.
Are you feeling overwhelmed in this moment? Are you worried you won’t know where to begin? I have great news! Brittany Ann has written a phenomenal book to get you started. It is packed with plans, ideas, and even what each book of the Bible represents so you won’t feel lost. You can find Fall in Love with God’s Word here.
As you spend time in God’s Word, you will find yourself with a new voice.
A voice that represents the person you truly aspire to be.
This week I am giving away a copy of Brittany Ann’s Fall in Love with God’s Word.
